A cutting machine turns a design on your phone or computer into cut vinyl, iron-on, cardstock or stickers. For a beginner, the useful questions are how wide a material it takes, which materials the maker lists, how it connects and what software it needs. Cricut is the best-known name, but other brands make capable machines too.

The six machines below run from a compact Cricut to a larger Maker model and three alternatives from other makers. Sizes, materials and features come from each product’s listing page. We have not used these machines ourselves, and the material and accuracy claims are the makers’ own.

1. Cricut Joy Xtra Smart Cutting Machine

A compact white machine measuring 6 by 12.5 by 5.5 inches that the maker says works with more than 50 materials, including vinyl, iron-on and cardstock. It also draws and foils, supports Print Then Cut with most inkjet printers and takes US Letter and A4 sizes.

Suits: a first machine for stickers and small projects. Strengths: a small footprint and Print Then Cut. Weaknesses: a narrower material range than the Maker line. Skip it if you want to cut thick materials like leather.

3. Cricut Maker 5 Deluxe Bundle

A newer Maker the maker calls 30 percent more compact than earlier models, with a 12 inch cutting width. It lists 300+ materials, thicker materials up to 3 mm, 13 supported tools with a snap-in pen holder, and a bundle with supplies for up to 100 projects plus 25 bonus images and one font.

Suits: a buyer who wants a bundle with lots of supplies. Strengths: a broad tool list and included materials. Weaknesses: the listing gives no dimensions in its overview table. Skip it if you want a stripped-down machine alone.

4. Silhouette Portrait 4 Starter Bundle

A 9 inch vinyl cutter with Intelligent Path Technology, Bluetooth, an auto crosscutter and a roll feeder, listed as quiet at 50 dB by the maker. The bundle includes 24 sheets of Oracle vinyl, a weeding tool kit, 25 free designs and access to Designer Edition software.

Suits: vinyl projects outside the Cricut system. Strengths: a roll feeder and a software bundle. Weaknesses: the listing’s surface-area figure of 1728 square inches does not fit a 9 inch cutter, so we left it out. Skip it if you want 12 inch width.
