Identify the fabric and the insert
Before cleaning or storing patio cushions, find the furniture maker’s care label. The cover, foam insert, lining and seams can have different requirements. A removable zipper does not automatically mean the whole cushion can go into a washing machine.
Keep the instructions with the furniture model number. Sunbrella’s upholstery guidance recommends checking with the furniture manufacturer before removing some casings because cushion construction varies. Use that distinction when deciding what to clean at home and what needs the maker’s advice.
Remove dirt before packing
Brush away loose debris using the approved method and address spills according to the fabric’s care guide. Avoid leaving leaves or crumbs inside folds and seams. Do not apply a strong household cleaner simply because another outdoor fabric tolerated it.
If a cleaner or treatment is approved, follow its dilution and rinsing directions. Test where the manufacturer recommends. Combining products or adding extra concentration is not a reliable shortcut. Keep a note of the method used so the next seasonal clean does not start from guesswork.
Dry the complete cushion
Allow cushions to dry fully before covering or storing them. A surface that feels dry does not always tell you what is happening inside a thick insert. Follow the furniture maker’s drying instructions and allow for weather and humidity rather than relying on a fixed number of hours.
Do not pack a wet cushion into a closed box to tidy the patio quickly. Plan enough time between cleaning and seasonal storage to check the cushions again. If conditions will not allow suitable drying outdoors, ask the maker about an approved alternative location and method.
Choose a storage arrangement that fits
Measure the cushions and the storage opening, including thick corners and back cushions. Pack without forcing the lid against them. A storage box that holds the seat cushions may not have room for the entire sectional’s backs and pillows.
Choose a clean, dry location and keep the cushions away from sources of moisture. Check the storage container’s own instructions; weather resistance is not permission to fill it with damp material. Periodically inspect stored items rather than assuming the closed container has solved every environmental problem.
Label a set for easy reassembly
Photograph the cushion arrangement before removal and label positions with a method that will not damage the fabric. Keep ties and covers organized. This helps when corner, left-arm and right-arm cushions look similar but fit differently.
Are outdoor cushions waterproof? Do not assume so from the word outdoor. Can every zippered cover be machine washed? No; check the actual construction instructions. A useful seasonal routine is to clean as approved, dry completely, pack gently and inspect the storage location before the next season.
